Comedy for a Cause - Help Fund Legal & Grassroots Advocacy in Haiti

The Bureau des Avocats Internationaux (BAI) and the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH) drive systemic change in Haiti by helping Haitian activists and grassroots groups enforce their internationally-recognized human rights. We combine a range of strategies, including litigation, public advocacy on the streets, in the press, and on the Internet, capacity building of grassroots groups and activists, and lawyer training.  The BAI is run by Haitian lawyers and leads the work on the ground in Haiti, while IJDH brings Haitians' struggle for human rights to the centers of power in the U.S. and elsewhere where decisions about Haitians' rights are made.

For 23 years, BAI and IJDH have kept activists safe, rallied global allies to the fight for human rights in Haiti, and impelled the justice systems to serve marginalized victims of rape and other crimes. Highlights include:
  • forcing the UN to make an unprecedented apology to the Haitian people for bringing cholera to the country, and promise a $400 million response plan;
  • winning justice for victims of rape while addressing the systemic issues that make women vulnerable to sexual assault;
  • standing up for Haitians in the U.S. targeted by President Trump's racist immigration policies; and
  • empowering Haitian grassroots activists and training Haitian human rights lawyers.
